Camp Detainees Sent to Lengthy Prison Sentences
Newest information reveals the mass transfer of Uyghur and other Turkic camp detainees to prisons, namely in interior China where they are sentenced to lengthy prison terms.
Aydin Anwar, Uyghur Outreach Manager for the Save Uyghur campaign, comments that “this is all a way to systemize the internment of the Uyghurs on a much greater scale. With camps, one could not determine when a detainee would be released. With prisons, that is made clear. People are easily sentenced to 15-20 years of prison for not committing any crimes”
The Chinese government had previously claimed that it released most of the detainees, but activists and experts express that being ‘released’ means not being free, but subject to an equal or greater form of oppression.
Testimonies and other evidence reveal that prisoners are subject to torture and death, with little to no contact with their family members.
