Save Uyghur Statement on Cross-regional Joint Statement in East Turkestan

Save Uyghur commends the recent cross-regional joint statement by 43 UN member states in regards to the ongoing genocide conducted by the Chinese government against the Uyghur people. The joint statement expressed grave concern about the arbitrary detention of millions of Uyghurs, as well as the systemic human rights violations, forced sterlisation, sexual violence, torture, and familial sepration that Uyghurs face at the hands of Chinese authorities.

SaveUyghur shares the concerns expressed by the joint statement, and reiterates the recommendations put forward, including the immediate ratification of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) by the Chinese government, the non-refoulement of Uyghur refugees and asylum seekers, and the implementation of the eight recommendations made by the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD). The Chinese government must provide unfettered and transparent access to the region for independent UN observers, including transparent investigations conducted by the office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. SaveUyghur also requests the publication of the findings of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights with respect to the situation in East Turkestan.

SaveUyghur welcomes greater international solidarity in pressuring the Chinese government to cease its campaign of widespread detention and grave human rights abuses against the Uyghur population of East Turkestan. SaveUyghur calls upon the international community to condemn the genocidal practices of the Chinese government, and encourages more UN member states to come forward and participate in future efforts to help put an end to these pervasive violations of human rights.
